The first Spanish athletes across the finish line were Pablo Sánchez (1h02:13, eleventh) and Ester Navarrete (1h10:43, eighth).
17,000 runners broke the participation record on a historic day, as the race celebrates its thirtieth edition.
The Ugandan Rebecca Chelangat earned the victory in the thirtieth edition of the Seville Half Marathon, smashing the course record by 41 seconds, with a time of 1:07:18. Chelangat led the race from the start, although it was in the final 5 kilometers where she began to pull away from the rest of the women, crossing the finish line solo on Avenida de Las Delicias. Her compatriot Annet Chelangat was second just under a minute behind (1:08:12), and the young Ethiopian Yalganesh Eskarmech Gedefa finished third in 1:08:50, completing the podium of the Sevillian event, the flattest half marathon in Europe.
The first Spanish woman across the line was Ester Navarrete, finishing eighth, with 1:10:43, seven seconds ahead of Meritxell Soler, the second Spanish athlete with 1:10:55 (ninth overall). Both achieved the qualifying standard for this year’s European Road Championships.
In the men’s category, victory went to Vinicent Nyamongo Nyageo with 59:33, the third-fastest time ever on the Sevillian course. The Kenyan broke the race at kilometer 11 near the Costurero de la Reina and led solo all the way to the finish, chased by the Frenchman Felix Bour, who ultimately finished second less than 30 seconds behind the African. Fellow Frenchman Valentin Gondouin took third place (1:00:17) after overtaking the Irishman Hiko Tonosa Haso, fourth, who equaled his national record with a time of 1:00:51. The runner from Burgos, Pablo Sánchez, was the first Spanish athlete in the standings, eleventh overall, with a time of 1:02:13, also qualifying for the European Road Championships. The runner from Segovia, Javi Guerra (1:02:41), was the second Spanish athlete.
In the wheelchair category, the victory—as in the past two years—went once again to Joaquín García Díaz (1:01:21). Manuel Alfonso Betancor (1:22:21) and Juan Carlos Trujillo (1:39:11) finished second and third, respectively.
Today marked the 30th edition of the Seville Half Marathon, organized by the San Pablo Athletics Club with the collaboration of the City Council of Seville. It gathered 17,000 runners, breaking its historic participation record, with 30% women on the start line and more than 3,000 international participants. It is the flattest half marathon in Europe, with only 5 meters of elevation difference between its lowest and highest points, making it a very favorable course for achieving top performances over the distance.
The Seville Half Marathon is organized by the San Pablo Athletics Club and Create Eventos y Deporte, with the collaboration of the Municipal Sports Institute of the City Council of Seville, Quirónsalud, Hoka as technical sponsor, and the sponsorship of Sprinter; Plátano de Canarias (the race belongs to the National Running Circuit Plátano de Canarias); Hyundai is the official car; Renfe is the official transport; and it is supported by LifePro, CitySightseeing Sevilla, Aquadeus and Powerade, as well as the official media Soy Corredor, Sport Life and ABC de Sevilla.
